30 Years of Experience in High-Quality Early Childhood and Pre-Primary Education in English

The English-language daycare Playschool Friisinmäki (formerly ICEC Kilo) is located on Siuntiontie, surrounded by a beautiful forest. The nearby forest, in addition to our own yard, serves as an extended learning environment. Playschool Friisinmäki provides high-quality, child-centered early childhood education and pre-primary education for children aged 0–6.

Supporting Language Development in an English Environment

At our English-language daycare, children grow in a multicultural, international environment that actively supports language development. We strengthen and encourage children’s language skills through positive activities such as play and songs.

We understand and respect different ethnic backgrounds and observe cultural events. We celebrate many international holidays, including Diwali, Chinese New Year, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and more.

In the English-language environment, children explore, marvel, rejoice, and develop linguistically and culturally. We aim to introduce children to diverse cultures and help them grow into curious global citizens with open hearts.

Also Offering Finnish Language

Due to demand, the daycare also has a bilingual (Finnish–English) group, where children can also receive instruction in Finnish. In the bilingual group, children are given the opportunity to acquire Finnish or English in a functional and play-based way. At the same time, a foundation is built for lifelong language learning. The aim is that operating in a multilingual environment sparks children’s linguistic curiosity and willingness to experiment.

My name is Marja Kemppainen and am the manager of both Playschool Friisinmäki and Westend.

I have been part of the daycare since 1994. I have been in management in various different role s since 1995. My background education is that of Kindergarten teacher. I have educated myself further and for many years assessed and verified a UK early years qualification. Most recently I topped up my knowledge in Children’s rights and participation from Jyväskylä University. I have also partcipated in research concerning children’s language development and cultural identit.

I grew up in South London in a multicultural and diverse community but moved back to my birth country Finland in 1987. My own background helps me to understand the development of bilingual and multilingual children.

I love to develop the creativity of children through dance and music. Children’s literature also always inspires me. The importance of these I can never talk enough of.
