At Home in Nature – Daycare near Vanhankaupunginkoski

The small and homelike Mörrintupa daycare is located in a historic setting by Vanhankaupunginkoski, close to the site where the city of Helsinki was originally founded.

Daycare activities have taken place in this atmospheric log villa since 2008. Today, Mörrintupa is a close-knit community of 28 children and their families, four educators, and a daycare assistant. Cooperation with parents is an integral part of the pedagogy and is based on trust and openness.

Mutual trust among the adults caring for the children is a key factor in supporting growth, development, and well-being, as well as in creating a sense of safety. Excursions, celebrations, and events are organized together.

Outdoor life all year round

“At home in nature” means outdoor life in all kinds of weather, throughout the year. Outdoor living includes spending time, playing, and moving in nature as well as in the daycare’s own yard.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, we head to the Pornaistenniemi nature trail near Vanhankaupunginlahti. In spring, we get to walk along a fairytale-like path draped in a “green veil,” listening to the spring songs of nightingales and many other birds. In the middle of the beautiful reed beds, at the end of the boardwalk, there is also an exciting hidden shelter where children can peek in and observe the activities of water birds.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, our excursions take us to Kalliometsä, where we can enjoy the warmth of “Sun Rock,” play with flowing water at the “Waterworks,” and engage in many other diverse forms of play.

Every other week, the 5–6-year-olds go on a slightly longer adventure beyond familiar surroundings and spend the whole day on an excursion. These so-called “long trips” are made on foot, by bicycle, or in winter by skiing. Packed lunches prepared at home in the children’s own backpacks are an essential part of these days.

On Fridays, we enjoy a “home day” and spend time outdoors in our own yard.

Our own vegetable garden, planting boxes, and willow hut

Our yard is designed to be as natural as possible. A sandbox, vegetable garden, planting boxes, a woodworking area, a willow hut, and play equipment such as pots, ladles, and frying pans give children many opportunities for imaginative play. The picnic tables in the yard also allow us to eat lunch and snacks outdoors and to do various crafts.

A laavu as a home base

At Mörrintupa, we are one big family where children of different ages spend time together. The youngest learn from the older ones through imitation, while the older children help the younger ones with everyday tasks. During transitions, mealtimes, artistic activities, and baking, we divide into age-appropriate small groups in familiar “home bases.” One of these home bases is a laavu (traditional shelter) located in the yard.

The rhythm of the year shapes everyday life

The cycle of the year and its related celebrations give rhythm to our lives—we live, in a way, “from one celebration to the next.” First preparing and anticipating, then celebrating, and finally winding down. Our daily life is also structured by a regular weekly and daily rhythm, which brings predictability and a sense of security for the children. Every day, we gather together in the fireplace room for a shared story circle, listening to a story told by an adult.

Every daycare day is unique

Educators journey alongside the children, striving for genuine encounters with each child, supporting their curiosity, sharing in their experiences, and engaging in attentive, listening interaction every day.
