Pilke Väläys – A Science-Oriented Daycare in Saaristokaupunki
Pilke Science Daycare Väläys opened in August 2017 on Retiisikatu in Kuopio’s Saaristokaupunki. Väläys is a science-focused daycare providing early childhood education for children aged 0–5 years.
Exploration and Discovery for Little Scientists
Our science focus is embedded in the daycare’s pedagogical plan and is reflected in many aspects of daily life. Children have opportunities to explore different scientific fields and phenomena in depth. The nearby natural environment encourages curiosity and supports a deeper understanding of their surroundings, for example through regular excursions.
Our learning environments are designed to inspire and encourage exploration and experimentation. The daycare also has a dedicated science play area where little scientists can conduct experiments using tools such as pipettes, magnifying glasses, test tubes, microscopes, and light tables. Science education for children under three is based on sensory experiences, observation, curiosity, questioning, stories, and fairy tales.
Finnish as a Second Language
We also offer Finnish as a Second Language (S2) instruction. Children learn Finnish in a safe and supportive environment, while their home language and culture are respected. In everyday activities, we also communicate fluently in English.

Wonder and Discovery
It is important to us that children at our science daycare learn to discover, experiment, and experience success through these activities. In planning our activities, we take into account each child’s own interests. Children are seen as active participants and are encouraged to influence daily life at the daycare. At the heart of everything we do is wonder and exploration alongside the child.
Children are encouraged to seek knowledge, think critically, and act independently. The adult’s role is to listen, support, and provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the child’s growth and development. Our key working methods include small-group activities, child observation, and project-based learning.
