Pilke Hokaus provides science-oriented daycare services in Vuores, Tampere

Pilke’s science-oriented daycare centre Hokaus opened in the Tampere district of Vuores in 1 August 2016. The new, modern district which combines closeness to nature, high-quality architecture, environmental friendliness, top-notch technology and small-town services provides a fitting setting for the daycare unit whose operation emphasises natural sciences. After the daycare centre’s extension was opened in October 2017, the unit’s capacity increased to 141 daycare places for children aged 0–6 years.

Hokaus’ science-orientation has been recorded in our early childhood education and care curriculum. On a weekly basis, the children participate in science groups in which they wonder and explore natural phenomena with their peers in accordance with their interests. The exploration of phenomena is an educational form of play that provides children with experiences of success. The children can make discoveries in the daycare centre’s scientific play room which is equipped with exploration instruments, such as loupes, magnifying glasses, pipettes, a microscope and a light pad. The science activities are planned taking note of the children’s ages, interests and safe courses of action. Our early childhood educators develop and evaluate methods for exploring natural sciences and plan the science-oriented operation so that it forms a holistic part of the 1–6-year-old children’s self-expression and activities.

At Hokaus, the educators attend to the children in a genuine manner and maintain a close connection to the parents. For us, it is important that the children are seen and heard during their play and learning activities. Our play environments have been built in a way that motivates and encourages exploration and experimentation. The spacious daycare centre yard enables various games and activities. Our yard area also includes a small stretch of forest bulging with interesting exploration opportunities and exciting spots for play.
