At Playschool Pohjantähti, Every Child Is a Star

The international Pilke Playschool Pohjantähti is located on Mesikukantie in Koivuhaka, Vantaa. Pohjantähti offers extensive bilingual early childhood education and preschool in both Finnish and English, in a warm and welcoming environment.

An International Atmosphere

The daycare has a multicultural and international spirit that encourages children to learn about other cultures as well as their own. We celebrate various cultural festivals alongside traditional Finnish holidays in an age-appropriate and educational way — for example, Chinese New Year, Indian Diwali, and English Halloween.

The Kota Group Spends Several Hours Outdoors Each Day

In autumn 2024, the daycare launched the Kota Group, which alternates its activities weekly between indoor and outdoor environments. The group’s base is a charming kota (Lapp-style hut) located in the daycare yard. The Kota Group spends several hours outdoors each day, and whenever possible, the children also enjoy their meals and naps outside in the cozy kota.

Greetings from the Pilke Pohjantähti manager

Hi, I am Ringa Sunn, Pilke Pohjantähti/Polaris kindergarten manager.

I have a wide qualified educational experience in early years, music and arts, also in international environments. I have been working in several Finnish and English speaking kindergartens and schools for well over ten years, first as a kindergarten and music teacher, later as a manager in English speaking multicultural kindergarten settings for the last eight years.

I am a warm hearted, creative person and love to have a close relationship with the staff, kids and families. We are going to have a lot of fun working together!

Outside Pilke opening times you can find me composing; playing and singing folk/ethno music in different music projects/bands, knitting, crafts and spending a lot of time with my family.

I am delighted, excited and happy to introduce myself and Pilke Pohjantähti to you.

Our teaching methods in Pohjantähti encourage the children to laugh a lot, and use both English and Finnish in a natural way through activities and everyday situations. We follow the Finnish national core curriculum for early years in both Finnish but mostly English language. Our staff working language is English, and the whole staff is international: we embrace this every single day. Diversity is a huge strenght here as we see it  <3

We beliveve here in Pohjantähti, that children learn everything, language included, quickly through play, arts and problem solving with the guidance of our magnificent teachers. Our main goal is to get them motivated, interested and excited for new things and experiences and enjoy all of it before entering school. The more curious they get, the more interesting their whole life gets in future. This opens doors and makes everything possible! Our kindergarten has a capability to have children of all ages from babies through preschool. They all have their own specific learning areas designed to suit every age group to learn and show their best potential.

We have also monthly visiting activities for you to join in to experience how we learn through play with our children. You are always welcome for a visit!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask, I am here to help you out :)

A Foundation for Lifelong Language Learning

In the English-speaking groups, broad bilingual early childhood education is provided in accordance with Finland’s new national early childhood education curriculum. The goal of bilingual education is to make use of children’s natural sensitivity to language learning by offering them a richer and more diverse language environment than usual.

Children are given opportunities to absorb and use languages in active, playful ways. At the same time, this approach lays the foundation for lifelong language learning. The aim is that working in a multilingual environment sparks children’s curiosity and willingness to experiment with language. This kind of early education also naturally brings together many different cultures.

Finnish Language Too

For children under the age of three, early childhood education is language-enriched. In language-enriched activities, children sing familiar songs and rhymes and explore simple concepts together in English — but Finnish is also used in daily routines.

This approach helps children become gradually and naturally familiar with a new language.

At the Vantaa Pilke units, we also offer families the following:

  • We often go on snack excursions.

  • We take annual daycare photos of the children and groups. Some of the photos are free of charge for families.

  • Throughout the year, we organize many events for both the daycare and the whole family. Sometimes, we also invite grandparents and other close relatives.

  • Celebrations are important to us: we usually hold spring and Christmas parties as performances, and we celebrate each child's birthday, as well as Father’s Day and Mother’s Day.

  • Many of our daycare centers have an active parent committee that anyone interested is welcome to join.

  • You can follow the activities of our children’s groups on Instagram.
