Our learning orientation
At a nature-oriented daycare centre, children develop a positive attitude towards nature, outdoor activities and sustainable living. At Home in Nature – Kindergarten in Kumpula Close to Nature

Our small, homely daycare Kesäkumpu is located between the green Vallilaanlaakso valley and the rocky forest area behind the Kätilöopisto, on the ground floor of a completely ordinary small apartment building. The Kesäkumpu community consists of 5 educators, 35 children with their families, and a daycare assistant. We offer high-quality, child-centered early childhood education and pre-primary education in a cozy setting for children aged 0–6.

Respect for each other and the environment, safety, loving care, and joy are the core values guiding our community. Play, creative activities, and everyday routines naturally take place both in the nearby forest and park, as well as indoors.

Outdoor life all year round

At Home in Nature, we enjoy outdoor life in all weather, throughout the year. Morning and afternoon outdoor activities take place in the fenced playground of Vallilaanlaakso and its surroundings. The rolling, diverse park landscape and its botanical garden provide a beautiful setting for activities year-round. In the park, we can enjoy activities such as sailing bark boats in the spring stream, sledding on the snow-covered hills, cooling off under the botanical garden’s sprinkler in the summer heat, having snacks on the grass under the trees, or going on adventures along the old railway tracks.

Welcome to Explore Our Activities!

A Forest Full of Adventures

A short walk away, behind the Kätilöopisto, lies our forest site, Kalliometsä, where we go on excursions three times a week. The final stretch to our forest spot is along a "secret path" lined with raspberry bushes, where we can enjoy delicious berries in the summer. Kalliometsä offers space for both activity and tranquility; the large Konkarikivi rock and towering trees invite climbing, the soft mossy valley provides a safe place for playful wrestling, and crevices in the rocks or roots encourage exploration and discovery. Puddles remain in rock hollows for a long time, offering little fishing spots for young explorers.

We Give Time for Free Play

Play, arts, and daily tasks naturally take place in the nearby forest, parks, and indoor spaces. Every day includes dedicated time for free play. Singing is an integral part of our daily activities, both in guided group gatherings and transition moments, with songs also celebrating the seasons. Musical instruments are explored indoors, while in the forest, instruments are created from natural materials through children's hands and imagination. Once a week, we paint indoors, while on other days, chalks and paints accompany us to the forest and parks. Every day, we gather to listen to a story told by an adult, enriched by a small stage or lap theater.

Every Kindergarten Day is Unique

Inside the kindergarten, a cozy interior with rag rugs enhances a homely atmosphere. From autumn to spring, we spend the time between lunch and afternoon snack indoors, including a rest period. In the summer, we enjoy our afternoon snack outdoors in the park's natural setting. After rest, children can participate in daily tasks and handicrafts with an educator, such as preparing food by peeling and chopping vegetables. Once a week, we spend more time indoors playing and baking together as a whole group. The indoor space also opens onto a small backyard where we tend to our plantings.
