What does a daycare focus or learning orientatios in early childhood education mean?

All Pilke daycares follow Finnish early childhood education legislation, and our operations are guided by both the national and municipal early childhood education plans.

In many of our daycares, everyday activities are enriched by a specific focus area. Our learning orientations are nature, sports, music, arts and expression, or science. The chosen focus is always included in the daycare’s early childhood education plan. In addition, some of our daycares operate in English, are bilingual (Finnish–English), or Swedish-speaking.

A focus area means that the chosen theme is reflected in the daycare’s daily activities in a varied and meaningful way. For example, in our nature-focused daycares, activities are guided by our Nature Year Cycle, which structures the themes and periods of the year. Early childhood education and preschool activities are planned around these themes, and learning takes place in a variety of environments, such as on nature outings and in small-group activities.

At the same time, everyday life remains familiar and well-balanced: children enjoy a mix of play, outdoor activities, excursions, physical activity, reading, music and crafts – along with time for rest.
